Roses

Pastel on Wallis sanded paper 11x17

I felt so inspired by all the wonderful still life set ups and beautiful oil paintings at Kat Sowa's studio when I took Brenda Boylan's pastel workshop there a couple of weeks ago....

I just had to try to see if I could accomplish the sunny, painterly expression......
I shared the day with my friend Denise
She worked on this lovely watercolor.....
in progress.....

I warm colorful day shared!

Here is a link to more beautiful paintings done in Kat Sowa's studio by artists from alla prima portland....

Photography lesson,,,,

It was a beautiful dry day to venture out to Amity today. My journey was to meet with artist Marilyn Affolter for a private photography lesson at her studio. This old barn stopped me on the way....and having my camera by my side, it was a must to pause and take some photos.
After spending time in the studio discussing camera settings and how to better understand and use the manual mode on my camera, we set outside to put into practice what I learned.
 ISO 100    F/8 Aperture   1/250 Shutter Speed
 ISO 200   F/3.5 Aperture   1/1000 Shutter Speed
 ISO 100   F/3.5 Aperture   1/250 Shutter Speed
 ISO 100   F3.5 Aperture   1/320 Shuuter Speed
And then on the way home, again I just had to stop and capture a couple shots of the amazing landscape and lovely farms. I have to admit, I didn't take enough time to get my camera set properly for these, however they could be inspiration for future paintings...

What a great teacher Marilyn is!....She simplified some of what I had been trying to teach myself with reading my camera manual, and lots of trial and error. Now I will move forward with some basics that should help me move away from always using the auto setting, and instead have fun exploring the manual mode possibilities.
