Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts...

This art day started at the Lake Oswego Farmers Market....
We found a dry table under cover to have a morning treat.
 Deanna, Denise, Debbie, and Leslie
There is so much amazing public art.....

We took the shuttle to the Festival of the Arts.
How fun to see Lynne Wintermute and all her beautiful pastel paintings!
Check out her work at...
And we had to stop and visit Salem artist Jake Szramek
before we headed back on the shuttle
to find some Happy Hour food...
It rained on the trip up, and on the way home,
however the sun did make some appearances
to brighten up the day even more!

More workshop adventures with Dawn Emerson...

This squirrel assignment started with a black and white charcoal drawing. We focused on value drawing -
no details, no lines. We thought in terms of planes and where the light hits. The goal was to fill up
everything with value, pushing and pulling with charcoal and erasers. Then we began putting in veils of color, using only two complementary colors, three values of each. The yellow was brought in as a discord color to help make the color pop.
Moving on, we sectioned off a full piece of the Rives BFK paper with tape to frame six  sections for exploration.....and abstract play. It was so fun to try different grounds, paints, ink, pastel, watercolor crayons, oil pastel sticks, and go for it! Building layers, scraping out, tracing around and sometimes painting over the top again. The top left and bottom right got painted over again, and are ready for more exploration!
It was an interesting journey....tracing around the scissors, then adding some strokes of
pastel in the negative space around them. I love the sumi ink peeking through...
Day three we chose a subject and worked on fitting into a format, stretching ourselves and exploring possibilities. We took time to draw our subject in several 4-6 formats to look at it in a different way, and get familiar with it.
After 5 minute sketches with charcoal on newsprint, we prepared our Rives BFK paper in the favorite format. I prepared four surfaces, all with different grounds. Two of the surfaces I added some Golden Liquid Acrylic paint to the gesso and pumice to make a more dynamic ground. My goal was to work on marks and color as I took my subject and really pushed myself.
I will keep the "Spirit of Exploring" as I continue working on these pieces.....

What a great art adventure!

Celebrate....

What a joyful birthday with my art sisters Deanna, Denise, and Leslie!

How fun it was to have Jonathon join us for some art time together!
 Here is Leslie's collage piece....
 And Denise's acrylic painting....
I am working on another barn scene. I started with an acrylic underpainting before the pastel. It's still in progress.....
I had to stop on the way home to take a photo of this old barn. It looks like it could be another possibility for a painting!

Denise and Deanna are taking time to capture pictures of the blossoms...There are so many in full bloom!
Then we settled in for some painting and sketching time.
